Honest Research Practices Are Essential in an AI-Driven World

The ºÚÁÏÍø (AUN) Writing Center held a session on Friday, February 21, 2025, to help students improve their academic skills. The event was part of the Essential College Skills Series and focused on the impact of digital technology on education.

Mr. Omachi Okolo, the Assistant Director of Information and Digital Literacy, gave a presentation about the rise of generative AI and how it has changed the way information is accessed and used in academics. He explained that while AI has many benefits, it also raises questions about research practices, critical thinking, and ethics. He talked about how AI has changed how information is gathered, processed, and shared, and how it has created new challenges for traditional information literacy.

Mr. Omachi Okolo discussed the importance of maintaining honest research practices in a world where AI is widely used. He encouraged students to see AI as a helpful tool, not something to rely on completely. "AI is a powerful tool, but it should support your thinking — not replace it." He said.

Ms. Emellenne Akpan from the AUN Writing Center added that students should not let AI do all their thinking for them. "AI is here to stay but students are in school to develop their own thinking skills, and that's something you should never forget." She said encouraging the students on critical thinking.

The event reminded students on understanding how to use AI responsibly and why it is important to think independently.
