Liberal Arts Education: AUN Law Professor Jennifer Mike's Work Published by Springer Books

Springer Books has published a chapter contribution by AUN Law Professor Jennifer Mike to a book on Liberal Arts Education. Professor Jennifer Mike, AUN's representative in the Global Liberal Arts Alliance (GLAA), contributed a chapter titled "'Being the Premier Development University for Africa: A Case of the ºÚÁÏÍø' in the bookÌýThe Reinvention of Liberal Learning Around the Globe.

Professor Jennifer Mike's contribution is a nuanced and exhaustive exposition that left out no detail on the philosophy, practice, learning outcomes, and impact of the liberal arts education at AUN, Africa's premier Development University. Brilliantly crafted and arranged under clear sub-headings, the 17-page essay enthusiastically captures the ºÚÁÏÍø’s coming-of-age trajectories, learning curves and trials. She robustly articulates how being resolute and faithful to its liberal philosophy has emboldened the University to embrace diversity, respond to cultural stereotyping, survive and control the conflictual narratives thrust on its path by the Boko Haram insurgency and Covid-19 pandemic while emerging as a credible and trusted agency for change and compassion in the region of the country facing severe socioeconomic, environmental and cultural challenges.

The book itself, edited by Insung Jung and Ka Ho Mok, which define liberal arts education "as an approach to preparing students to develop skills in creative problem-solving, critical thinking, communication, and collaboration, while aiding in the development of a moral and civil character," gives ample space to liberal arts scholars around the world to share their perspectives, outline challenges, and set agenda for new discourses and possibilities.

Professor Jennifer Mike, also the Director of the Centre for Governance, Human Rights and Development (CGHRD) and Interim Chair of the Department of Public Law, recently presented at an academic conference in Geneva, Switzerland, and which was hosted by the Brocher Foundation.

Her presentation was titled 'Right to Health and Corporate Responsibility of Transnational Oil Corporations in Nigeria: Unveiling the UNGPs on Responsibility to Respect.' The exhibition examined the Corporate Responsibility of Transnational Oil Corporations such as Shell Development Corporation in Nigeria and how they comply with their obligations to respect people's health rights in their host communities. The presentation, which will be published as a book chapter, also analyzed the obligations of international and domestic transnationals in the light of legal norms concerning environmental degradation resulting from hydrocarbon pollution and gas flaring and its corresponding effect on the right to health.

This multidisciplinary event, ‘The Human Right to Health and Corporate Responsibility in Sub-Saharan Africa,' featured a collection of Health-related Researchers/ African Health Advocates from different African countries.
