On October 25, 2022, the AUN Career Office facilitated an information session between students and alumni and the Education Department of the United States Embassy in Nigeria.
It served as a platform where students and alumni could acquire up-to-date information and find solutions to their questions about getting accepted to and receiving scholarships from graduate schools in the US.
Mrs. Grace Nwokoma, Director of Career Services coordinated the exchange from the AUN campus end while Ms. Sade Adebayo, Education Specialist in the Public Affairs office of the US Embassy, fielded questions with students and alumni on the procedures and opportunities available to AUN students to pursue graduate programs in the United States.
"I don't think there's any place in the world that gives you the kind of academic and financial opportunities like those the US schools offer", Ms. Adebayo told the audience via zoom.
Any student applying for admission to a US college or university should get in touch with administrators at the institutions where they plan to enroll, according to Ms. Adebayo. "
The quality of ºÚÁÏÍø education is excellent and it fosters critical thinking abilities. She added that there are over 1,700 graduate school programs accessible in the US, as well as tutoring and assistantship roles at graduate schools from which students can benefit while studying and that the degree is very valuable and there is a restitute you can acquire.
She urged students applying for admission and scholarship to braze up to the tasks as it takes a lot of stressful processes which she categorized into five steps:
- Researching your options- researching your choice of school types, program types, and supervisors
- Financing your study- saving up enough money for the course or program you intend to undertake
- Completing the application forms- mostly online applications
- Applying to schools of your choice- depending on your option of school type and program type
- Applying for Visa- preparing for visa interview and GRA Language test or exam
Additionally, it was suggested that applicants explore the universities they intend to attend. They must educate themselves about the programs they wish to pursue, as well as the entrance standards, writing guidelines, and teachers. They may also need to be aware of the school's location. Additionally, students must get ready in advance for standardized tests.
"Begin putting together your statement of purpose. You can connect your essay to ongoing study, to your lecturers, and verify your grammar structure. You can also present a relatable, unique experience."
She also encouraged graduate study applicants to take the GRA test despite the availability of a waiver sometimes, because it enhances their chances of admission and teaching assistantship positions to students
